Heartbreak for Shane as Westlife star's mother dies
Westlife star Shane Filan has thanked fans for their support following the death of his "incredible, beautiful" mother.
The singer posted a message on Instagram saying Mae Filan passed away on December 15, "the saddest day of my life".
"My mother Mae who was an incredible, beautiful woman, wife, mother, grandmother & friend passed away peacefully surrounded by all her family.
"I'd like to say thank you to everyone for all your well wishes at this time," he wrote.
Filan's bandmate Kian Egan was among the first to send condolences.
He wrote on Instagram: "We will be there for you brother through this very sad time. She was an amazing woman."
Mae Filan was due to be laid to rest at a ceremony in Sligo this afternoon.
Shane's bandmates Nicky, Mark and Kian will all attend alongside the band's manager Louis Walsh.
The mum of the famous singer died peacefully on Sunday after a brief illness and was cared for in the North West Hospice.
She was surrounded by her son Shane, her husband Peter and the rest of the Filan family.
The funeral notice read: "Mae Filan... died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family in the exceptional care of the staff of North West Hospice, Sligo.
Shane was incredibly close to his mum and often talked fondly about her impact on his career and personal life.
As much as she was a confidante to the singer, she was a doting grandmother to Shane and his wife Gillian's three children.
A family friend said: "Mae was the centre of their lives and is has broken Shane's heart to say goodbye.
"It is a terribly sad time for the whole family because she was such an amazing grandmother and mother.
"They can take solace that they were together with her in her final moments," they added.
