Neighbours have launched a legal challenge to drink and dance licences being granted for the two-day Samhain music festival in Dublin.

The sell-out event, featuring Britpop icon Liam Gallagher, will take place on October 28 and 29 in a hangar at Dublin's Weston Airport, 20 minutes from the city centre.

The line-up for the first night is Annie Mac and 2manydjs, plus Eats Everything, Mele and Kelly-Anne Byrne.

Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher will headline the following night, supported by Cavan rockers The Strypes and Derry punk band Touts.

However, local residents have formally objected, and their court action was adjourned yesterday to allow talks with event organisers to take place.

The case was listed before Judge Michael Coghlan at Dublin District Court.

Dorothy Collins, for Olympia Productions, said it had applied for an occasional drinks and a temporary dance licence for the event.

Ms Collins said she was aware that there were objections.

A statutory meeting is scheduled to take place today, the barrister said, and she asked that the case be adjourned for a week.

Judge Coghlan granted the adjournment and said: "In the meantime, I think it is good to talk in this instance."

One of the objectors, Hugh Collender, speaking from the public gallery, told the court that residents have already had several meetings with the applicants.

"Now it is before the courts, I am encouraging a further meeting," the judge replied, as he put the case back for one week.

Olympia Productions is applying for the licences to be in place from 6pm to midnight on October 28 and from 6pm to 11pm the following night, when Liam Gallagher and his band take to the stage.

After the brief hearing, several residents spoke with the applicant's solicitor, Ursula Courtney, outside the courtroom in relation to the proposed meeting before they left the building.

The festival is the first of its kind to take place at Weston Airport.
