A memorial garden dedicated to the young victims of institutional abuse will be installed in a high profile location in the heart of Dublin.
The Government has unveiled the winning design of the memorial which will be constructed beside the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square.
The Journey of Light garden will be a permanent memorial to the helpless victims of sexual, physical and emotional abuse meted out in institutions for young people.
A permanent memorial was recommended by the Ryan Report which investigated abuse in institutions from the 1920s to the 1980s.
The memorial will include the wording of the Government's apology in 1999 for the suffering of victims abused while in State care.
It stated: "On behalf of the State and of all citizens of the State, the Government wishes to make a sincere and long overdue apology to the victims of childhood abuse for our collective failure to intervene, to detect their pain, to come to their rescue."
