Harrington wings in on new €2m jet
PADRAIG Harrington became an official member of the jet-set when he touched down in Dublin yesterday in his own private plane.
The golfer snapped up the second-hand aircraft for a mere €1.45m and plans to use it to ease the stress of his frequent transatlantic trips to play on the US PGA Tour.
The 13-seater Gulfstream G3 is believed to be more than 20 years old.
The 39-year-old Dubliner had been looking out for a jet for the past three years, but was put off by the cost. He had said it would make life easier for both himself and his family with his constant travel to the US. He is now taking advantage of the global downturn to buy the bargain aircraft.
In June 2009, Harrington said: "Warren Buffett calls his plane The Great Unjustifiable and I don't think I will be able to justify it either."
However since then private plane prices have dropped considerably and Harrington decided to take the plunge and buy.
He has already made good use of his new purchase, arriving home in Dublin yesterday, fewer than 12 hours after his first-round defeat in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona.
