Handgun pointed at gardai in chase
GARDAI had a loaded handgun pointed at them during a terrifying high-speed chase in west Dublin yesterday.
Two garda cars were rammed and a firearm seized after the dramatic 30-minute chase in Clondalkin in the early hours.
The vicious standoff resulted in the arrest of a dangerous gangster from the so-called 'Infamous D22' gang.
The 25-year-old remained in custody at Clondalkin Garda Station last night after his arrest at around 12.10am yesterday.
Gardai also arrested another one of his pals aged in his 20s who was in the car with him.
Sources have revealed that before the arrests by armed detectives, there was a high-speed chase in the Clondalkin area in which two garda cars were badly damaged.
The drama unfolded at 11.40pm on the New Nangor Road and ended at Woodford Walk at 12.10am.
Miraculously no officer was hurt in the terrifying incident which began when a high-powered Audi failed to stop for gardai. This led to a large number of garda units being involved in the chase and the gangster "brandishing a small handgun" at gardai before two garda cars were "rammed several times".
Detectives caught the suspect – who was only recently released from prison – with a handgun and later arrested another male suspect who they believe had been in the car.
A source explained: "This fella has been causing mayhem in the Clondalkin area since he got out of prison, particularly in recent weeks. He is a serious criminal who has been involved in heavy organised criminality for years."
The suspect who has multiple previous convictions for drugs offences is the right-hand man of jailed gang boss 'Champagne Killer' Karl Breen.
Breen is due to be released from Ireland's highest-security prison in Portlaoise next year where he is serving a sentence for the manslaughter of his pal in a north Dublin hotel.
The 25-year-old suspect who was arrested yesterday is a key member of Breen's crew who were involved in the bitter west Dublin feud between Breen's notorious D22 gang and the Clondalkin-based gang known as 'The Family'.
