Grieving son flies home after road crash

THE 21-year-old son of the woman killed in a north Donegal road crash was expected home from America today.

Jonathan O'Donnell was on a US backpacking holiday and it took authorities almost 15 hours to contact him and notify him about yesterday's death of his 51-year-old teacher mother Marie, from Portsalon, Co Donegal.

Her death in a road crash came a month after eight people lost their lives in one crash in nearby Inishowen.

Jonathan's father John (50) was said to be in critical but stable in Letterkenny General Hospital after the car driven by his wife was in collision with another shortly after 2.15am yesterday.

Celebration

The couple were on their way home from the silver wedding celebration of their close friends, Henry and Kathleen Callaghan.

Kathleen wept as she recalled the tragedy: "We had such a high night with our family and friends and then to hear how it ended with what happened to Marie and John is unbelievable. It's just another statistic on our awful road tragedies."

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the collision between the O'Donnells' silver Micra and a blue Honda Civic just outside Milford in an 80kph speed limit zone on the road to Kilmacrennan.
