Gran killed by car lost daughter to tumour

The death of a Dublin grandmother in a freak accident in which she was run over by her own car is the second tragedy to hit her family in the space of a few short years.

Ann Gray (67) died as she was parking her car on Millbourne Avenue in Drumcondra on Thursday afternoon.

She was planning to collect her grandson Lee from nearby St Patrick's primary school when the tragedy occurred.

Three years ago Ann and her husband Barry lost their 27-year-old daughter Alexandra, Lee's mother, to a brain tumour. She died on the January 1, 2009.

Family members have described Ann as a very careful woman, and said they are all shocked by her death.

"It's terrible, absolutely terrible, there will be an inquest to try to find out what happened," they told the Herald.

She was dragged up to 10 metres under her Ford Fiesta after it appeared she may have fallen from the car while it was still in reverse gear.

Investigators are examining other possibilities that she may have been leaning out the door of her car as she reversed when she fell from the vehicle.

After removing her seat belt, Mrs Gray may have been halfway out of the car when she took her foot off the clutch and was dragged under the car.

Gardai are appealing for anyone who was on Millbourne Ave between 12.30pm and 1pm to contact Santry Garda Station.
