Government to blame for charge fiasco
With just five days to go until the deadline for paying the new household charge, the Government is facing the embarrassing prospect of a majority failing to pay up.
There will inevitably be a rush of people registering in the coming days. Few, after all, hand over taxes before they absolutely have to.
But if, as now appears likely, a large number of otherwise law-abiding taxpayers don't hand over their €100, the Government has to take a large share of the blame.
It has made it unnecessarily difficult for many people to pay up by declining to use post offices as an obvious collection point and by presuming that almost every family in the country can pay bills on line.
The Government failed to understand that if you want people to hand over money, you make it as easy as possible for them to do so.
