Internet giant Google will hold the first of a series of meetings today to debate the balance between privacy and the free flow of information after a European court ruling in May reinforced Europeans' so- called "right to be forgotten".

The event in Madrid will be the first of several meetings in European capitals as the company struggles with a flood of requests to remove personal details of anything from serious criminal records, embarrassing photos, instances of online bullying and negative press stories from its search findings.

Google said that by July it had received more than 90,000 requests from individuals to have data hidden under the European ruling.
