Geldof's goodbye to Freedom of city farce
Bob Geldof is resigned to saying farewell to his Freedom of the City honour, despite calls to have it reinstated.
The Boomtown Rats frontman was angered when Dublin City Council last week stripped him of the honour, after agreeing to remove Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi from the honour roll.
The Live Aid activist said he was "absolutely disgusted" councillors also took off his name a month after he appeared at Dublin City Hall to return the scroll in protest at Suu Kyi holding the honour.
He had said he wanted to keep the honour but he didn't want to be on the same list as Suu Kyi, who has done nothing to stop genocide against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
Geldof said he was happy to stay on the list as long as she was removed from it.
Councillor Mannix Flynn, who worked with Geldof on the issue, said the singer had effectively washed his hands of the issue after speaking with him last night.
It came as Mr Flynn failed to secure 12 signatures necessary from councillors to put forward a motion that would see Geldof's honour reinstated.
