Gardai in €6m drug seizure

A huge drugs haul worth more than €6m was seized by gardai and custom officers in a major anti-smuggling operation.

In co-ordinated swoops by teams of officers, the massive seizures of the illegal drugs were made in Dublin and Kildare.

An extensive joint-operation swung into action action after a cargo of frozen meat arriving in Ireland at Dublin Port caused a major alert among garda and customs officers.

The frozen meats consignment routes were then traced to destinations outside of the port.

As a result, a lock-up premises in Ballyfermot in West Dublin and a commercial premises in Naas, Co Kildare, were surrounded and searched yesterday afternoon.

Members of the Garda National Drugs Unit and officers from the Revenue Customs Service led the raids, assisted by local gardai.

A garda spokesman said the searches yielded herbal cannabis and cannabis resin with an estimated street value of €6.5m. Two men aged in their 30s and 40s were arrested.
