The Usual Suspects

Gardai are on the hunt for actors to play criminals and help get officers ready to face the real thing.

The force wants to recruit a Usual Suspects-style line-up of professionals to fill in as suspected murderers, sex offenders and gang members as part of an initiative to train specialist investigators.

They will be paid to assume the role of criminals in garda interview situations, allowing officers to show what they can do.

Villains

It should not be too difficult to find the required talent, as many of the country's finest actors have portrayed villains over the years.

Hollywood star Brendan Gleeson played crime boss Martin Cahill in 1998 thriller The General.

RTE's Love/Hate also lifted the lid on gangland life, while Fair City has feat-ured characters living on the other side of the law, including crazed kidnapper Ciaran, played by Johnny Ward.

The call for actors says they should not be over-dramatic but reflect typical behaviour in the given role.

They will be expected to play suspected criminals who are resistant during interview to enable gardai to demonstrate their skills in such a situation.

Applicants have also been told the interviewers should be doing most of the talking.

In another module of the course, concerning specialist interview training, the actors will assume the role of child sex abuse victims or persons with intellectual disabilities who will allege they have been the victims of a criminal offence.

That aspect aims to train specially-selected officers and Tusla social workers.

In the final examination for that module, the actors will act out a scenario based on a child alleging sexual or physical abuse.

Gardai confirmed they are seeking to hire seven actors and one supervisor for each course.

There will be 13 courses a year, with 12 participants on each.

The courses will take place at the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, and Dublin and begin in the third quarter of this year.

The deadline for tenders is July 23.
