A GANG of burglars threatened to chop off a woman and her 10-year-old son's fingers with a meat cleaver in a raid on their home, it has been alleged.

A court heard the gang held the woman and her child's hands on the kitchen counter and told them they would cut their fingers off if she did not tell them where her money was.

The gang of five allegedly made off with her BMW and more than €30,000 in cash after subjecting the 34-year-old woman and her son to a 20-minute ordeal in her family home.

A 16-year-old youth appeared in Dublin District Court charged in connection with the burglary. Judge John Coughlan refused to grant him bail following garda objections and he was remanded in custody to appear in court again next week.

He is charged with aggravated burglary and being a passenger in a stolen car at Belfry Green, Citywest at on November 11.

Another youth (17) has already been before the courts in connection with the incident, while a third who was arrested has been released without charge.

Garda Kieran Kilcoyne told the court the accused made no reply to the charge at Tallaght Garda Station on Thursday night.

He objected to bail on the grounds of the nature and seriousness of the allegations. He also said gardai feared the accused could interfere with witnesses or dispose of the still-missing cash if granted bail.

He said the alleged victim was at home with her son when she heard a loud bang at the door at 7.50am. She looked out, saw a number of males and tried to hold the door closed.

They forced their way into the house, where they attempted to tie her hands with cable ties, while screaming at her to tell them where the money was.

One took a meat cleaver from the kitchen worktop and another took a steak knife. They threatened to kill her while her son was in her arms.

Her hand was placed flat on the kitchen counter and the raiders said they would cut her fingers off.

They threatened to do the same to her son, Garda Kilcoyne said. They also threatened they would take her son away. At one point, she tried to escape with her boy through the front door but was dragged back inside.

The court heard the intruders took €30,800 in cash as well as a phone, iPad and laptop, before leaving in her BMW. Only the car and the phone had been recovered.
