Gang slices up face of sex offender in car attack
A convicted sex offender suffered horrific facial injuries when he was lured into a car and slashed multiple times by a three-man gang in a "bloodbath" punishment attack.
The shocking incident unfolded at Beechwood Drive, Drogheda, at around 5.45pm on Tuesday.
Sources have revealed that one of the east coast's most violent crime gangs was behind the sickening attack in which a Stanley knife was used to hack at the victim's face and head.
It is understood the trio fled the scene in a black Volkswagen Passat before the 31-year-old was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
He required a number of staples to be placed in his head and also needed stitches to his face.
While an exact motive for the attack has not yet been established, sources said the gang may have targeted the victim over allegations that he attacked a local woman.
The victim has multiple previous convictions, including for sexual assault, driving offences and other crimes he has committed since he was a teenager.
No arrests have yet been made in the case being investigated by Drogheda gardai.
The victim has since been discharged from hospital.
The Herald can reveal that gardai are investigating if the former right-hand-man of jailed gangster Cornelius Price ordered the attack.
The 33-year-old thug was previously a suspect in a similar knife attack and has been a major target for gardai for years.
However, he is not believed to have been a direct participant in the attack.
Since Price was jailed last year, his former close associate has become a more powerful underworld figure.
Price was jailed for three years in February 2017 after being convicted of reckless endangerment of a garda at Balbriggan Garda Station more than three years ago following a trial.
The gangster who has taken over from Price was heavily involved in the bitter feud that led to the gun murder of Benny Whitehouse in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, in September 2014.
Since the murder of Whitehouse, the gang has carried out a number of attacks against people connected to him.
The same gang is also believed to be responsible for the suspected murders of Willie Maughan (34) and his partner Anastasija Varslavane (21) who were last seen in the Gormanston area of Co Meath on April 14, 2015.
