DUBS star Bernard Brogan is to turn on the Christmas tree lights in the Kerry town of Listowel – to the consternation of some locals.

There is uproar in the Kingdom after the All-Ireland hero was asked to flick the switch at this year's event.

Delighted traders invited the footballer but they hadn't anticipated the reaction from some Kerry GAA fans.

Some took to the local airwaves to complain, asking why a Kerry footballer wasn't chosen instead.

Listowel Independent Traders' Association Jennifer Stack said she would be "disappointed if anybody was insulted". She said: "Everyone is welcome to come and meet him. Bernard is an absolute gentleman. I know the traders are all very much behind it.

"We've had huge publicity from it if nothing else so we're very, very happy. He's an absolute gentleman to his fingertips so we're delighted to have him."

Billy Keane, who runs John B Keane's pub in Listowel, believes the fierce rivalry between Dublin and Kerry in GAA circles is the reason behind the opposition.

Billy told the Herald: "I think it's a football thing really. I take no notice of it personally.

"The real reason (that Bernard was asked) is that he is probably as much a Listowel man as he is a Dub. His mother was born three or four doors away from me. We're very proud of him."

Town councillor Denis Stack, a first cousin of Bernard's mother, told the Herald: "As far as I'm concerned, a thousand welcomes to him."

It is unclear whether Bernard will bring Sam with him for the event, which takes place between 5pm and 7pm on November 22 and is part of the five-day Listowel food fair.
