Five people have been hospitalised after a pile-up in dense fog early this morning.
The crash involving seven cars and a truck happened shortly after 8am on the N2 between Ashbourne and Slane near the Kilmoon Cross junction.
It is understood that one vehicle hit another at a small junction, but that accident caused a succession of further impacts.
A heavy goods vehicle was also involved in the crash.
The driver of a Fiat car had to be cut from the wreckage. At one point there were ten units from the National Ambulance Service in attendance.
The five people who were hurt had injuries that were as non-life threatening, but some were taken in ambulances using spinal protection as a precaution until they were assessed in hospital.
A section of the N2 road was closed for a time to allow emergency vehicles and towing crews access to the injured and the wreckage.
The incident caused tailbacks and delays for many commuters and goods traffic that use the busy road.
Meanwhile, 30 school children have escaped without injury after their bus went on fire in County Donegal.
The coach carrying children from St Eunan's College and Loretto Convent had to be abandoned in Letterkenny at 8.40am.
