Five killed in suicide blast
A suicide bomber blew up an explosives-filled vehicle at a police unit in Iraq's southern oil port of Basra today killing five people and wounding 15.
The explosion damaged the building and destroyed several vehicles at the main gate of the compound belonging to a police rapid reaction unit. All of the casualties were police personnel.
"The bomber tried to drive into the compound but guards shot at him after he failed to stop and he detonated his vehicle," said Ali Ghanem al-Maliki, the head of the Basra provincial council security committee.
Nicole steps in to Cheryl's slot
Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger said Cheryl Cole has "done what's best for her" after replacing the singer on the US version of the X Factor.
Cole was dropped from the show last month, only three weeks after she was first given a judging role, with X Factor boss Simon Cowell saying he was worried the Newcastle-born star would be uncomfortable in America.
Asked about the affair in a TV interview , Scherzinger said: "I've met Cheryl only a couple of times and she's absolutely gorgeous and lovely. I know she's done what's best for her."
Gunman kills three women
A man has killed three women and himself in a shooting in a car at a North Carolina business park.
The three murdered women were in their 20s. The gunman is 23-year-old Brinton Millsap.
Investigators say all the women were shot several times. Investigators say the three women were shot dead inside the car, while the man was found dead outside the vehicle.
