Firm defends writing essays for students

A COMPANY offering to write essays for students insisted today the service does not tempt students to commit plagarism.

Write My Assignments has already supplied 10 Irish students with written essays for €280 to €350 each.

Matthew Keogh (23), a former student of IADT college in Dun Laoghaire, said he and his business partner Michael Noble do not condone plagarism in any form.

He said his company has hundreds of people on their books who can write essays for students. Each writer has achieved at least a 2.1 college degree in the past five years.

He acknowledged there were a number of unscrupulous UK and US companies on the internet that condoned plagarism.

"There are some such companies out there that do condone plagarism by allowing students to hand up pre-written work as their own.

"We are the only service that offers a mentoring service. The mentors do all their communication with students through email," he told the Herald today.

The student is expected to only use the specially commissioned essay as a 'reference' rather than hand it in as his or her own.

Both he and his business partner live in Co Wicklow and have an office at Bullford Business Campus in Kilcoole. Michael Noble (23) is a post-graduate student at University College Dublin's Smurfit Business School.

They charge up to €350 for 3,000 word essays and more than €800 for 10,000 words.

However, a spokesman for the Union of Students in Ireland said the use of essay writing services are not recommended.

Such services run the risk of cheapening educational qualifications and damaging the education system, he said.

The Irish company's website states it will provide "authentic academic papers written by high calibre postgraduates which can be used as an assignment aide".

Mr Keogh said the essays sold so far to students include assignments on English literature and business.
