Fireman dies after marathon

A 35-year-old North Carolina firefighter who was running for charity has died after collapsing during the Chicago Marathon.

Greensboro Deputy Fire Chief Clarence Hunter said that William Caviness was running to raise money to help burn victims.

Race medical director Dr George Chiampas said Caviness collapsed on the course about 500 yards from the finish line.

He said medical personnel were able to get his heart beating again but he died 1 hour 45 minutes after he was attended to at the race.



700k celebrate gay pride show

Authorities in Brazil say nearly 700,000 people have celebrated in a gay pride parade at Copacabana beach

Many participants waved rainbow flags and wore lavish carnival costumes as loud music blasted from more than 15 sound trucks in yesterday's festivities.

Gay men, lesbians and cross-dressers danced and cheered to demands that Brazil enact more laws against homophobia in Latin America's biggest nation.

Organisers had hoped for nearly 1.5 million people at the 16th annual parade, but Rio de Janeiro police tell local media that about 700,000 were present.



Forces 'open fire on strikers'

Indonesian security forces have opened fire on striking workers at Freeport-McMoran's gold and copper mine, killing one and critically wounding another, according to a union leader.

Police said it was too early to comment and Freeport officials were preparing an official statement.

Workers at the Grasberg mine in easternmost Papau province began a strike on September 15, demanding pay increases. About 90pc of the mine's 12,000 employees are taking part.
