Find out what your family did in Rising

WAS your grandad really in the GPO? And did Uncle Jim really ambush the Black and Tans?

A new website launched by the Defence Forces will help answer some of the history questions that continue to decorate our family trees.

The mission to put the country's Military Archives online is due to be completed by March, with 36,000 pages of witness statements relating to key military events which shaped Ireland from 1913-1921.

The website will allow Irish people all over the world to search for information about a family member or their parish.

Militaryarchives.ie was launched by Lieut Gen Sean McCann, chief of staff of the Defence Forces, and is designed to appeal to everybody from professional and amateur historians and genealogists to ordinary people hoping to find out if relatives really were involved is shaping the nation.

"This will provide a major and never before seen insight into the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence," said Defence Forces spokesman Capt Stephen MacEoin.
