FF cllr hails his daughter's lotto luck for €50k windfall

A FIANNA Fail councillor is celebrating after scooping almost €50,000 on the EuroMillions lottery.

Former Donegal mayor Brendan Byrne says he has to thank his daughter Silvia for his lotto luck – he only did the draw because it was her birthday on St Patrick's Day.

"I wouldn't do the lottery all the time but it was St Patrick's Day and it was Silvia's fourth birthday and I was feeling lucky," he said.

"I stopped off to get petrol for my car and decided to do a €9 Quick Pick and thought nothing more about it."

On Wednesday, he was back in the same Texaco station in Donegal town and decided to check his ticket.

"I handed over the ticket to a member of staff and she just laughed and said 'You'd better ring the lottery'," said the 35-year-old. "I couldn't believe it."

Mr Byrne was one of two Irish winners who collected €49,796. And as for little Silvia, she's hoping for a few extra birthday presents.
