Father's plea on murdered son

The Department of Justice is to study a letter which was sent by the father of a teenager who was beaten to death with an axe and dumped in a field, calling for for a reinvestigation into his son's murder.

No one has been charged with Jeffrey Hannan's killing in 2007, despite gardai arresting and formally questioning 20 people.

Today marks the seventh anniversary of his son's murder.

Alan Hannan said he has written to the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to help him to get Gardai to refocus their resources on the case.

Eight killed in road smash

Police in Brazil say eight people are dead following a head-on car crash that also left three others seriously injured.

The accident occurred near the city of Esplanada, some 200 km from the Bahia state capital of Salvador.

Seven of the victims, including a woman and her daughter, died instantly. Another person died shortly after arriving in a hospital.

Two die in balcony fall

Two men ,believed to be carrying a sof,a died when part of a balcony collapsed in London.

At least six others were injured following the incident in Cadogan Square in Knightsbridge shortly before 10am. All eight are believed to be removal men.

London Ambulance Service (LAS) initially said one man had died and another was taken to hospital.

The Metropolitan Police later said a second man had died in hospital.

Cops win right to sport fuzz

Colombian police no longer have to wait until they reach the top ranks to grow a moustache.

Since 1997, a code of conduct gave only officers above the rank of lieutenant the right to sport a little hair above their top lip. Rather than shave, lower-ranking officers decided to sue and Colombia's state council sided with them in a ruling.

The court said the prohibition violates a constitutional right to develop one's own personality.
