Actress Aisling O'Neill has revealed she was sent several letters of support for her performance in the harrowing storyline of sexual abuse on Fair City which had critics and viewers of the show raving about her performance.

O'Neill plays Carol Foley, one of the most-loved characters on the popular soap.

The tough-as-nails Carrigstown character revealed she was abused by her father's friend when she was 11 years old - and O'Neill did not tread lightly when it came to getting her performance right.

"I wasn't nervous but I knew I had to play it very sensitively because I was aware that a lot of people have suffered from that," she told the Herald.

The actress was honoured to receive letters of support from viewers who thanked her for her accurate portrayal of the complex issue.

"I did get letters from people, I was delighted about that. People said I did it justice so I was pleased," she said.

O'Neill's character Carol has been involved in several shocking storylines over the years, with the child abuse revelations being one of her most prominent.

"She's had a very hard life so I have to pull a lot out of myself sometimes because she has been sexually abused and all of those kind of things.

"It's great to play that because it gives you a chance to really act," she said.

O'Neill's performance led to a nomination for Best Female Performance in a soap or comedy at the Irish Film and Television Awards last week.

The plot took a shocking turn when Carol's estranged father, Trigger, showed up at her wedding to ruin her big day. He even resorted to physical violence, dragging and beating his daughter just to try and throw a spanner in the works.

Mother-of-one O'Neill is not sure what lies ahead for her character in the coming months, but is sure fans of the soap will be enthralled.

"I've had some major storylines over the years. She's just got married so we will have to see. It will never be dull, that's for sure," she said.
