TOURISTS are being encouraged to visit the chaotic Smithfield Horse Fair by Failte Ireland.
Visitors to the capital are attending the event without realising the public safety issues which have plagued the market.
At the latest event, two men were shot while fights broke out between rival Traveller families.
Video footage of the fair showed women and children running for safety as horses stampeded when the shots went off.
Another serious incident occurred a number of years ago when a horse bolted onto the quays and crashed into a car.
But on its DiscoverIreland.ie website, Failte Ireland pinpoints the horse fair as worth visiting.
"Soon after dawn on the first Sunday of every month, Smithfield Square fills with hundreds of horses."
However, no warning is given about the possible dangers at the fair.
