A 13-year-old girl has died and her sister is fighting for her life after a road accident in Co Derry.

Teenager Georgia Doherty and her sister Lisa (26) were in a car that collided with another vehicle close to the Tamnaherin Road turn-off from the main Derry to Belfast Road, at 5pm yesterday.

The sisters, from Clar, Redcastle, on the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal, were returning from a day out in Belfast visiting relatives.

Lisa (26), who was driving the car, has been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she is in a critical condition.

Georgia was a talented soccer and gaelic football player with her school

Moville Community College and with Redcastle United FC.

The PSNI said there had been heavy rain all day – with surface water causing difficult driving conditions.

School friends arriving at Moville Community College this morning were in tears and staff were helping to comfort them.

Relatives were at Lisa’s bedside in hospital in Belfast today praying for her recovery.
