Ex-soldier on murder charge

A retired member of the defence forces has been sent forward for trial over the murder of a Co Westmeath woman earlier this year.

Father of three Jimmy Devanney (63), of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone, is accused of murdering 37-year-old Marie Greene, whose remains were discovered in a bog on the outskirts of Athlone last February.

Ms Greene, of St Mel's Terrace, Athlone, had been missing for a number of days before her body was located by gardai in a bog off the Mullingar Road on Athlone's east side.

Haiti cleans up after flooding

Haitians cleaned up homes and streets yesterday as rains let up and rivers receded following an early summer storm that caused flooding, wrecked homes and killed more than two dozen people.

Haiti's Civil Protection Department said the death toll from seven days of rain had climbed to 25 and was likely to increase as Haitians searched for relatives feared dead.

Two deaths were added to the list yesterday after residents found the bodies of a man and woman at the bottom of a ravine, said Edgar Joseph, a spokesman for the Civil Protection Department. He said six people were still missing.
