Ex HSE boss Drumm criticised over book

A DUBLIN TD has blasted former HSE chief Brendan Drumm for writing a book detailing his time at the top of the health service.

Professor Drumm finished his five-year contract with the scandal-plagued HSE at the end of August last year, and has since returned to a post in UCD, where he commands a salary of more than €250,000.

His contract with the HSE was worth around €400,000 a year. He also got a €420,000 farewell package.

But now he has written on his time at the helm of the health service in a book called The Challenge of Change.

"People who write books called The Challenge of Change should be writing based on a good track record, but Brendan Drumm does not have that," Independent TD Finian McGrath told the Herald.

Drumm was at the helm during a series of much publicised crises, including misdiagnosis scandals, child-protection service failures and thousands of unreviewed X-rays at Tallaght Hospital.

"I find the whole thing a bit rich, that the former chief executive of the HSE is writing a book and possibly making money on it," said Finian.

While the book details his time at the top of the HSE, it is not believed to contain any major controversies. It will be released by Orpen Press in four weeks' time.
