Hundreds of Irish to become Aussies today

A FURTHER 203 Irish people were granted citizenship on Australia Day today.

Over the last 10 years, the number of Irish people getting Australian citizenship has more than doubled.

Up to 1,302 have now been granted citizenship in the last 12 months, according to Ireland's leading migration experts www.visafirst.com.

"Australia day is traditionally a day when many make the final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen," said Edwina Shanahan, manager with visafirst.com.

"In 2010 1,279 Irish people became Australian citizens, this rose to 1,300 in 2011 and the figure is expected to rise again in 2012."
