Election Briefs: Emigrants have say via website

IRISH emigrants will be able to cast a 'symbolic vote' in the General Election with the aid of a new website.

The aim of Ballotbox.ie is to highlight the issue of disenfranchised emigrants. It will open for voting from February 15 until February 22.

Nearly 28,000 citizens left Ireland in the year ending April 2010, and at least 60,000 have left in the last three years.

FF get an F for spelling

FIANNA Fail's 'strengths' are clearly not in their spelling prowess.

The first page of their published manifesto outlines what the party calls the 'Strenghts (sic) of our Economy'.

CIF wants party commitments

CONSTRUCTION industry representatives want political parties to pledge job security for 100,000 people working in the sector.

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) wants plans to grow jobs, a commitment to a reinvigorated public capital investment programme and implementation of a review of wage-setting mechanisms.

Nap time for sleepy Eamon

FIANNA Fail's Eamon O Cuiv was caught napping on the job at the launch of the party's electoral reform plan.

Mr O'Cuiv blamed "four hours' sleep last night, canvassing on Inis Mor, meetings all evening, Dublin very late, and in the Dail at 7.45am".
