AN ELDERLY woman and her disabled daughter were tied up in their home by three raiders who escaped with more than €10,000 of their savings.

The robbery, which took place in Mahon, Co Cork, left the mother and daughter shocked but uninjured.

The mother, who is 65, suffered a serious bout of illness recently and had withdrawn the money from her savings account to get work done on her home. Her daughter, who is 40, is disabled.

Three men, one in his 40s and two in their 30s, gained entry to the house and
demanded cash.

Two were wearing masks while the third did not attempt to hide his identity.

After securing the cash, the raiders brought the two women into the bedroom and tied them up. They then fled.

The women managed to free themselves and raised the alarm.

They were uninjured but deeply shocked and were given precautionary medical checks.

The elderly woman later went to stay with her other daughter, who lives nearby.

She said the family were too upset to talk about what happened to her mother and

"I have no comment to make. The guards have asked us not to comment as their investigation is ongoing," she added.

Neighbours expressed outrage at the incident.

Gardai described the robbery as "a very mean crime".

"This is a very upsetting thing for anyone to go through, but particularly for a lady who is very vulnerable due to health reasons," a garda source said.

The two women are deeply upset about the theft and were being comforted by neighbours and friends.

Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the robbery.

It is believed the three raiders were targeting cash and
valuables to pay for drugs.

The chief suspect in relation to the robbery is a chronic
heroin addict.

Detectives have appealed for anyone who saw suspicious
activity in the Hunter's Green area of Mahon to contact
Blackrock gardai.
