Elderly German couple latest victims of car-jacking plague

Burglars hijacked the car of two German tourists who had stopped at the scene of a crash.

The assailants flagged down the couple’s black Mercedes C180 and forced them from the vehicle.

It was the fourth car-jacking in the past 11 days, sparking concern about copycat crimes.

The German couple were driving along the R755 between Rathdrum and Glendalough in Co Wicklow when they came across a serious road accident.

A Volvo had been in collision with a bus, and some of the occupants of the car flagged down the tourists and forced them from the car.

injuries

The female passenger in the Mercedes received minor injuries as she was being rushed out of the vehicle.

The four men then made off in the Mercedes in the direction of Glendalough.

Gardai said the Volvo had been used following a burglary in the Athy area.

Shortly afterwards the stolen Mercedes was located in Tullow, Co Carlow, and forensic investigators were called in to carry out a thorough search for clues.

Gardai believe the four men may be members of a gang who have carried out a spate of burglaries across Leinster.
