Economy now stable says new NCC probe

THE NATIONAL Competitiveness Council (NCC) claims there are indications that the Irish economy has stabilised but it has warned against complacency.

In its annual benchmarking report, published today, the NCC said the economy had made gains in international competitiveness recently.

But the NCC's chairman, Dr Don Thornhill recommended a relentless and thorough focus on reform, including structural changes agreed under the terms of the rescue programme agreed with the Troika.

Meanwhile, Engineers Ireland has welcomed the €2.25bn infrastructure stimulus package announced this week which is to create new jobs, mostly in construction.
