Dublin-based Mark Moriarty has been named world's best young chef 2015 at the grand finale in Milan.
The 23-year-old, who lives in Blackrock but is originally from Kerry, beat 19 other top chefs from across the globe to win the San Pellegrino Young Chef competition on Friday night.
Representing Ireland and the UK, Mark (below) won over the seven judges including Michelin-starred Massimo Bottura from Italy, Yannick Alleno from France and South Africa's most famous chef Margot Jans with his dish of celeriac baked in barley and fermented hay.
He was mentored by celebrated Northern Irish chef Clare Smyth, who is the first female chef in the UK to hold and retain three Michelin stars.
"I feel extremely proud to have won a competition of this size and this calibre," Mark said.
"With my signature dish, I wanted to capture the essence of Ireland and present humble, locally sourced ingredients like celeriac and barley in a unique way.
"I'm excited about this award. I'm also delighted of having been here these days with such wonderful people.
"It's great for Ireland and the UK. I want to thank my mentor chef Clare Smyth for the huge support and precious suggestions she gave me," she added.
