dublin legend john and little tom (3) climb the Hill for Jack and Jill Challenge

Double Dublin All-Ireland GAA champion John O'Leary wants all to climb Hill 16 with him and his son Tom (3).

He wants everyone who can support the pair to join him in the "Up the Hill for Jack and Jill" challenge which has an entry fee of €16.

John describes the people from the Jack and Jill Foundation as "angels" who came to the rescue of himself and his wife Catherine when Tom was born with a rare chromosomal disorder and profound special needs.

Tom needs 24-hour care and the family have been given respite hours by the Foundation "to allow us get out to the shops or the All Ireland final on Sunday or even to the Zoo with our other son Jack (5)".

"Certainly over the last four years they have kept Tom out of hospital numerous times.

"They are a voice at the end of the phone. They give you confidence, calm you down."

The 'Gala Up the Hill for Jack & Jill' is a month-long fundraising campaign throughout September. Anyone can join and host/organise a fundraising event.

John says donating to the Foundation is "quick bang for your buck. The money goes straight to providing the nurses", he adds.

The €16 registration fee covers one hour of home nursing care for one sick child at home and goes towards an annual €200,000 shortfall for the Foundation.
