Drunk teen tried to rob eaterie

A YOUTH has pleaded guilty to taking part in a drink-fuelled botched robbery at a Chinese restaurant in Dublin.

The 17-year-old boy, who is to be sentenced in December, demanded food before a female staff member was struck in the face at the Far East takeaway in Santry in April. He pleaded guilty yesterday to a charge of attempted robbery.

Garda Dominic McGrath told the Dublin Children's Court that the youth ordered food and then refused to pay.

The court heard that the teenager had no prior criminal convictions, had a job and wanted to be able to travel.

Heathrow set for handlers' strike

Ground handlers at Heathrow airport are to strike on Friday in a dispute over pay.

Unite said more than 500 of its members will walk out for 24 hours in protest at a delay to paying last year's award. Talks between the union and employers have broken down.

The strike will run from 00.01am on Friday at terminals one, two and three, involving check-in and baggage handling staff.

Unite said the deal on offer is 5.5pc over two years, which the union said was unacceptable, given the "soaring" cost of living.

Man (71) fends off bar raiders

A 71-year-old man has fended off three masked men armed with sticks as they demanded bar takings but left empty-handed.

The plucky barman first threw a tray of glasses at the raiders after they burst in at Heap Bridge Working Men's Club in Heywood, Greater Manchester.

They then dragged him to the floor. The barman remained defiant and the three men, who all wore balaclavas, ran off.
