A man drunkenly assaulted an elderly woman while she was putting out her bins, a court has heard.

Bin men came to the woman's aid after John Wall (44) pushed her.

Judge John Coughlan gave Wall, who is now in a wheelchair, the benefit of the Probation Act, telling him: "You are wasting court time. Don't come back."

The defendant, of Woodpark Halting Site in Sallynoggin, pleaded guilty at Drogheda District Court to being intoxicated, using threatening and abusive behaviour and refusing to comply with garda directions at Highfield, Drogheda, on August 11, 2017, and at Marian Park, Drogheda, on November 16, 2015.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting an elderly woman at Windmill Road, Drogheda, on April 7, 2016.

The court heard that the defendant was with a number of males at Highfield in August 2017. The group was told to leave the area.

Fell

Wall was highly intoxicated and told gardai to "f**k off", before he fell to the ground. He was then arrested.

On April 7, 2016, at 6.15am, the defendant pushed an elderly woman while she was putting out her wheelie bins for collection at Windmill Road. Bin men then went to the woman's aid.

Wall was intoxicated at the time.

On a separate occasion, in November 2015, he was intoxicated in Marian Park and became verbally abusive toward gardai when he was asked to leave the area.

He refused to leave and was arrested.

An updated probation report was handed into court.

"Essentially he has chronic problems," said defence barrister Irene Sands.

Applying the Probation Act, the judge warned Wall: "You are wasting court time. Don't come back."
