Dropouts worry IBEC
IRISH businesses group IBEC has expressed serious concerns about the 27pc third-level dropout rate for computer science students.
A further 20pc left engineering courses after their first year of study, according to the Higher Education Authority's report on college progression rates.
There was just a 2pc dropout rate in medicine and 3pc in law.
"This finding highlights a serious disconnect between our priorities for enterprise development and our areas of greatest vulnerability in terms of educational attainment," said Tony Donohoe, head of education policy at IBEC.
"Our economic recovery depends on a strong foundation in science and technology."
