THE Government is preparing to slash the welfare payments of householders who refuse to pay their water bills, the Herald has learned.
Workers who fail to register with under-fire Irish Water will also see their salaries being slashed under plans being considered by the Coalition.
It was confirmed yesterday that the Government is abandoning plans to reduce the water pressure in a household that refuses to pay their annual bill.
Instead, officials are "actively examining" ways to target the wages and welfare payments made to these households without involving the Revenue Commissioners.
"There are mechanisms which would allow us to touch people's welfare payments or salaries, but it would need to be done sensitively," a government source said.
The overall water package, which will reveal what families will pay, is due to be revealed in about 10 days according to Environment Minister Alan Kelly (above).
