Doireann's tale of being bullied brings back memories for me
Doireann Garrihy has opened up about being the victim of bullying while she was in school.
The radio host (25) revealed she was targeted by a group of girls as a teenager who made fun of her appearance. In a recent interview with Irish Country magazine, the Snapchat star spoke about how she struggled with bad skin through her teens.
On her 16th birthday, a group of girls wrote nasty remarks about her online and Doireann recalls "sitting at the computer and the tears just streaming down my face".
Like a lot of teens, I went through a period of suffering with my skin and I know how damaging it can be to your self-esteem when people make remarks on it.
I used to get in trouble for wearing make-up in school to conceal my breakouts.
I went to an all-girls school so it wasn't about trying to impress any boys, it was just a confidence thing.
I strongly agree with Doireann when she said she doesn't know how she would've coped being a teenager nowadays with "social media and everything".
The only social media platform I had in school was Bebo until 5th year when I set up my Facebook account. Even having smartphones with internet access in school only became popular when I was about 16.
I remember when I was in third year, I fell out with one of my friends who had older brothers.
Her brothers and their friends left really nasty comments about me on my Bebo page and I was distraught.
I think having something cruel written about you is even worse than someone saying it to your face.
You can easily make the mistake of reading the words over and over again which is like having someone saying it to you a hundred times.
Little did I know at the time, experiences like that were giving me thicker skin for what was to come later in my life.
I never planned to get into modelling or TV but once I won Miss Ireland at 19 years old, I realised I would have to toughen up a bit when it came to receiving criticism online.
I will admit I'm a sensitive person so some days it can be harder than others if you see someone slagging you online.
I try my best to ignore it and not respond, but there are times when I have risen to the bait. These days, if someone is hassling me with continuous abuse online I just block them and try not to give it a second thought.
