Seven applications for nursing homes have been lodged with Dublin City Council in just two months.
The plans have come as land owners seek ways to develop their holdings other than by building more apartments.
Ireland's ageing population means that demand for spaces is high, and is expected to remain so.
One of the biggest applications is at the Carriglea industrial estate, Naas Road, Dublin, where the Allied Bath Investment Company Ltd has applied to build a 141-bed facility.
This will require the demolition of the existing industrial buildings and security huts and the construction of four-storey building.
An objector, RMG Chart Entertainment Ltd, complained in a letter to the council that "the proposed location is totally unsuitable".
"It is located in the heart of an industrial estate, with several varying industrial operations. Issues of noise, heavy duty vehicular traffic, late-night working and car parking will all be factors detrimental to a nursing home presence on the site," the company said.
In another application, Creedon Property Services Ltd want to provide 149 bed spaces on lands bounded by Mill Street, Sweeney's Terrace and Clarence Mangan Road in Dublin 8.
It has applied for permission to demolish an ESB substation at the site and build a nursing home of four to seven storeys.
There will also be retail and commercial units at the ground floor level.If approved, the home will have 99 single bedrooms and 25 double rooms, along with communal living spaces and dining areas.
The application has received 22 submissions from the public, with several people complaining about the planned height of the scheme.
The other five applications relate to Clongriffin in Dublin 13; Drumcondra Road Lower, Station Road, in Raheny; Basin View, in Dublin 8; and the Star Bingo Hall, at Crumlin Road.
