Debenhams axes 170

Department store Debenhams is to cut 170 jobs across its Irish operations.

The British group said it hoped the job losses could be secured through voluntary redundancy and they have begun a 30-day consultation period with staff.

A Debenhams spokesman confirmed that it was not considering any store closures, adding that the company "want to open more stores and create more jobs". The retailer currently employs 1,700 staff directly in Ireland and 2,400 people when staff who work for franchises located within its stores are included.
