Death toll from fighting passes 6,100

The United Nations said the number of people killed in a year of fighting in Ukraine has now passed 6,100. It added that it is increasingly worried that breaches in a ceasefire will further worsen the human rights situation in parts of the country's east.

The UN human rights office in Geneva estimated yesterday that at least 6,116 people have been killed and 15,474 wounded since last April. The actual number could be much higher.

Last month March the office said the number of dead had topped 6,000. It said yesterday that about 400 civilians have been killed since the beginning of this year
