Daly's last ditch effort to save pal Mick

CLARE Daly made a list-ditch effort to stop Mick Wallace's resignation from the Dail Technical Group, the Herald can reveal.

The Socialist TD refused to personally accept her close pal's resignation -- much to the shock of her Independent colleagues.

Sources told the Herald that Ms Daly argued that the group should "stand by" the Wexford TD in wake of the tax evasion scandal.

However, in a statement by Dublin North Central deputy, Finian McGrath, it was confirmed that Mr Wallace's resignation had been "accepted" by the group.

Mr Wallace, who was pictured in Ranelagh yesterday, has also agreed to give up his position on the Oireachtas Committee on European affairs -- a role he was appointed to due to his membership of the Technical Group.

"Deputy Finian McGrath has confirmed Mick Wallace has resigned from the Technical Group and Dail committee," the statement read.

However the handling of the fiasco has plunged the group into disarray, with some members not being contacted whatsoever over the resignation. The group's chief whip, Kildare TD Catherine Murphy, said that the issue had been "dealt with days ago".

"We're not a party, we can't stop anyone from being in the Technical Group," she told the Herald.

However Finian McGrath, Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath and Waterford TD John Halligan said that that "almost all members" of the group believed Mr Wallace could no longer remain and that the resignation was formally accepted on Friday.

Refuse

Well-placed sources have revealed that Ms Daly's firm support for the ex-builder has "infuriated" colleagues in the United Left Alliance (ULA).

"She is refusing in the slightest to accept that what Mick has done is wrong and warrants him being removed. It's extraordinary. She simply won't budge," a source told the Herald.

Ms Daly is the only member of the Dail Technical Group to refuse to condemn the ex-developer over his €2.1m revenue bill.
