A GRATEFUL family has thanked the trio of firemen who delivered their baby son in their Tallaght home.

Baby Bobby Doyle was too impatient to wait for an ambulance crew to arrive yesterday morning.

Firemen John Walshe, Martin Guilfoyle and Tom Gallagher arrived at the home of the Doyle family at 10.29am and baby Bobby was born a minute later.

His parents Keith and Jennifer said that they will now have an important stop to make on the way home from hospital.

"I'll bring him down to see them at the station," delighted mum Jenny told the Herald.

"Thank God they were there."

Jenny said that she never "in a million years" imagined having her baby at home with the help of firefighters.

It was a dramatic arrival for baby Bobby, who weighed 7lbs 14 ounces and is doing well in hospital with his mum.

At 10am Jenny said she felt pangs but she wasn't convinced she was in labour.

"I though I was being a bit of a drama queen," she admitted. However, after summoning her partner home from work she decided to call an ambulance as well.

It was a tense wait for the pair who already have one daughter Katie (4).

"I was just running up and down the stairs and I was nervous that I was on my own. I'm so glad they got here in time," elated dad Keith said.

The family were in good hands however, as attending officer John Walshe has delivered 12 babies in his career.

"After an initial assessment we realised it that the birth was definitely imminent," he said.

"After the initial cry from the baby that allayed mum's fears, she was thrilled. We placed him up on her chest and dad cut the chord," he recalled.

"Today is one of the better days on the job.

"It's a great feeling to return to the station with good news. It is one of the most joyous days for a family and we get to be a part of it," he added.
