A FATHER-OF-THREE who was blasted twice as he answered the door to gunmen at his home in Greystones is recovering after surgery.

The victim, named locally as Rupert Stanley, was targeted by men who called to his bungalow at Redford Park just before 10pm on Monday.

He was hit in the abdomen and arm in the attack.

Last night neighbours said Mr Stanley and his partner had decided to leave the house for a number of days as the investigation continues.

Gardai believe the victim was targeted in a case of mistaken identity.

Neighbours reported hearing loud bangs and then seeing Mr Stanley's distressed partner Angela helping him after the men drove away from the scene.

"I heard two bangs last night at around 10pm and that must have been the shots," one woman said.

Another neighbour said that they only realised there was something wrong when they saw the blue lights of emergency services.

"When I looked up the road I could see the man's wife helping him," the neighbour said.

"There's no reason why anybody on this road would be shot and that's what makes it so frightening."

Locals said Mr Stanley, known as Ruby to friends, and his partner moved to Greystones around two years ago. It is believed the couple are originally from Ballyfermot.

"They are a lovely couple and they had done a great job doing up their house," said one local woman.

Gardai in Greystones are conducting door-to-door inquiries.

"Mr Stanley has had been operated on in St Vincent's Hospital," a garda spokesman said.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything in the area to come forward. It is at an early stage but we cannot rule out mistaken identity."

A garda forensic examination is still taking place. The front window of the property was also shattered in the attack. Gardai placed plastic covers over bullet casings from a handgun outside the property.
