Dad 'high on cocaine' when he stole hats'

A FORMER driver who stole two hats from a department store was high on cocaine and alcohol at the time, a court has heard.

Patrick Macken (39) realised his drink and drug use was getting out of control and he has since attended Coolmine Treatment Centre.

Judge David McHugh fined him €200.

Macken, of Ulysses House, Viking Harbour, Ushers Island, Dublin 8, admitted before Blanchardstown District Court to stealing two hats worth €79 from Debenhams in Blanchardstown last August 22.

Sgt Maria Callaghan said the accused was stopped by security as he left the store.

Defence lawyer Jennifer Jackson said Macken, a father of one, was sorry for his behaviour.
