Cyclist killed after horror crash with road sweeper truck
A cyclist has died following a collision with a council road sweeper truck.
The tragedy happened at 1.30pm yesterday in Whitechurch Road, Rathfarnham.
The man, who was in his 20s, has yet to be identified.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the truck was not injured and diversions were put in place on the road throughout the day.
Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed that two fire engines, two ambulances and an advanced paramedic attended the scene.
Rathfarnham councillor and cyclist Emma Murphy expressed shock following the tragedy, which is the 13th cyclist-related death so far this year.
"It only happened about five minutes away from my house and I use that road on a daily basis," she said.
"It's just such a horrific incident and my thoughts and prayers go to this man's family and friends, along with whoever else was involved."
In February, cyclist Tonya McEvoy, from Rathfarnham, was killed following a collision with a car on the outskirts of Kildare.
"Tonya was a school friend of mine," said Cllr Murphy.
"To hear about another local tragedy is heartbreaking.
"The specific road in Whitechurch gets very busy and I implore any cyclists to be extremely vigilant."
Councillor Francis Duffy, who is also a keen cyclist, has advised bicycle users to constantly have "their wits about them".
"You really need to be aware of everything around you," he said.
"I'm not saying that most drivers are there to take you out, but you need to be conscious and very careful at all times.
"You also have to make sure you have lights and reflective gear on, so that you can been seen while on the roads.
"I know the road where the tragedy struck and my condolences go to the family involved."
A garda spokesperson confirmed an investigation was now under way.
The spokesperson said the cyclist's body remained at the scene for a period of time to facilitate the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
He said that the driver of the truck was unharmed.
Gardai have appealed to any witnesses to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station on 01-666500.
Meanwhile, gardai have also begun an investigation into a fatal accident between Castleplunket and Ballintubber in Co Roscommon.
A woman, aged in her 90s, was killed in the incident.
A car was found crashed in a deep ditch around 3km from Castleplunket, at around 12.45pm yesterday.
There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
In a statement, the garda press office said the woman had been reported missing when she failed to return home from an appointment.
Her body was taken to University College Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will take place.
The road at the scene was closed for a time to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
