Creating jobs must be priority

It has been yet another grim week on the jobs front with announcements of over 1,200 jobs losses in the last few days alone. Devastating news for 950 employees of Ulster Bank has come hard on the heels of the 100 job losses at the Isaacs Group hotel chain, the Honeywell Measurex job losses in Waterford and the closure of Cruzzo's restaurant in Dublin.

The haemorrhage of jobs continues unabated and we are only two weeks into the new year.

Every single job lost impacts widely on immediate family and the wider community.

The knock-on effect of a family member losing employment is almost incalculable in terms of not just loss of income but the heartache, fear and emotional stress and the gloomy future outlook.

The scale of the losses this week underlines yet again how employment must be the absolute priority for Government.
