Crack epidemic is only getting worse, warns councillor
A north Dublin councillor is calling for more garda resources to deal with "the rising problem" of crack cocaine.
Independent councillor Noeleen Reilly, who represents the Ballymun area, said there has been an increase in crime by those addicted to the drug.
Her comments follow a campaign launched by Ana Liffey Drug Project alerting people of the risks of crack cocaine.
A source told the Herald that a number of gangs have been identified as making and dealing crack cocaine, including a north inner city-based group.
"You would have to be living under a rock not to see that Dublin is experiencing a serious problem with crack cocaine in the last year and it is only getting worse," Ms Reilly said.
"Drug task forces across the capital will all tell you we have a problem.
"The affect this is having on communities is very worrying.
"We have seen an increase in crime related to those addicted trying to feed their habits."
