Woman on ambulance theft charge

This is the woman charged with stealing an ambulance while it was on an emergency call out to an elderly patient.

Jessica Kavanagh (27) -- a community scheme worker -- was remanded on continuing bail at Dublin District Court after she was charged with unauthorised taking of a vehicle in the incident earlier this month.

The ambulance was taken while parked outside a north inner city flat complex while paramedics were tending to an elderly patient.

The incident happened in the early hours of January 8 this year at Rory O'Connor House at Hardwicke Street.

Ms Kavanagh, with an address at Hill Street Flats, also in the north inner city, is charged with a single count of unauthorised taking.

The offence is contrary to Section 112 of the Road Traffic Act.

A teenage girl was also arrested following the incident but was later released and a file was sent to the DPP.

The ambulance was recovered by gardai a short time after it was taken.

Judge Brian Smith asked if the DPP's directions were available yet. Gardai said that they were not and applied for a six-to-eight week remand.

Defence solicitor Yvonne Bambury consented to the remand.

The DPP's directions are required before it can be decided whether the case is to be dealt with at District Court level or in Dublin's Circuit Criminal Court where the potential penalties on conviction are more severe.

The judge granted legal aid. The case was adjourned to March 24.
